What is Etsy?

Etsy is an online marketplace for unique and creative goods. It centers on products defined by design, craftsmanship, or personalization, as well as vintage items and craft supplies. In total, Etsy offers more than 100 million items. 1

The company was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2005 and is still headquartered there today. Sellers present their products in their own shop with individual listings. Which offers are allowed on the marketplace is defined by Etsy’s Creativity Standards.

How relevant is Etsy for U.S. sellers?

For U.S. sellers, Etsy is above all a domestic sales channel with international reach for creative assortments. In the second quarter of 2026, the marketplace counted 86.97 million active buyers and 5.71 million active sellers. Gross merchandise sales reached $2.58 billion. Etsy doesn’t publish separate figures for individual U.S. states. 2

Etsy CEO Kruti Patel Goyal sees the difference from conventional product marketplaces above all in the platform’s personal character:

“Our differentiation as a human-centered marketplace is our greatest strength.”

– Kruti Patel Goyal, CEO of Etsy, August 5, 2026 3

In the first half of 2026, 74% of Etsy’s gross merchandise sales came from U.S. buyers 2. For U.S. sellers, the bulk of demand is therefore domestic, while the remaining quarter offers additional potential abroad, provided shipping is calculated properly. Etsy also works well as a complementary sales channel: 51% of surveyed sellers already sell through multiple channels. 4

How does Etsy work?

On Etsy, you sell through your own shop with individual product listings. Each listing includes photos, price, and shipping terms, among other things. Buyers find your products via Etsy search, categories, recommendations, or ads and complete the purchase directly on the platform.

You then process the order in Shop Manager and confirm shipment. Meanwhile, Etsy handles the payment, deducts the applicable fees, and transfers the available proceeds according to your chosen deposit schedule.

Unlike some other marketplaces, Etsy does not merge comparable offers onto a shared product page. Each listing stands on its own and competes for visibility independently.

Product assortments and selling models on Etsy

Which products can sellers offer on Etsy?

On Etsy, sellers may offer products they make or design themselves, vintage items, and certain goods for creative purposes. Some natural objects and assembled gift sets are also allowed. Ordinary merchandise, on the other hand, can’t be sold as a creative product without the seller’s own creative contribution. Every listing must fit one of the following four Etsy models and represent the item’s origin accurately. 5

Etsy model Eligible offer Seller example
Made by a seller made, altered, or assembled by the seller handmade ceramics
Designed by a seller own design as a finished product or digital file art print, sewing pattern
Handpicked by a seller personally selected vintage items, natural products, or curated sets antique vase, gift box
Sourced by a seller craft and party supplies or goods the buyer can personalize beads, engraved tumbler

Further product rules apply to these models. Vintage items must be at least 20 years old. For handmade products, Etsy requires your own photos. The first photo of a personalizable listing must also show a finished version rather than an unprocessed blank. If origin or presentation don’t meet the requirements, Etsy can remove the listing or restrict the shop. 5

What special rules apply to outside production and AI designs?

Print on demand and other forms of outside production are allowed on Etsy if the product is based on the seller’s own design. The production partner and the actual ship-from location must be disclosed in the listing. Suppliers of ordinary stock merchandise don’t meet these requirements. 6

AI-assisted designs may also be offered, provided sellers disclose the use of generative AI in the item description 5.

Costs and profitability of selling on Etsy

Which fees do Etsy sellers pay in 2026?

Etsy charges $0.20 for every listing. After a sale, a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% plus $0.25 for Etsy Payments are added, among other charges. For U.S. sellers, the transaction fee doesn’t apply to sales tax, but the payment processing fee is calculated on the total including tax. The following table summarizes the direct cost items. 7, 8

Type of cost Amount When is it charged?
Shop setup fee varies by location, one-time once, when opening the shop
Listing fee $0.20 when publishing and renewing a listing
Transaction fee 6.5% on item price, shipping, and gift wrapping
Etsy Payments 3% + $0.25 on the total payment amount including shipping and taxes
Currency conversion 2.5% if your shop currency and payment account currency differ
Offsite Ads 15% or 12% when an order is attributed to an external Etsy ad

A listing stays active for four months. Renewing it costs another $0.20. If you offer several units through the same listing, Etsy also charges the fee for each additional unit sold.

What do Etsy sellers need to know about sales tax and VAT?

U.S. Etsy sellers don’t have to collect sales tax themselves: as a marketplace facilitator, Etsy calculates, collects, and remits sales tax on orders shipped to U.S. buyers in every state with such laws, and sellers can’t opt out. 9 Income tax remains your responsibility; Etsy issues a Form 1099-K once your gross sales exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year, with lower thresholds in some states. 10, 11 For orders shipped to the EU or the UK, Etsy collects VAT on packages up to €150 or £135, and it collects VAT on digital downloads in many countries. 12, 13

Whether you still need a state seller’s permit depends on your state and on whether you also sell outside registered marketplaces; California, for example, doesn’t require one if all sales run through a registered marketplace facilitator. 14 In some states, Etsy also charges sales tax on its own seller fees, as in Texas since October 2025. 15

How do you calculate the costs and margin of an Etsy sale?

Subtract all Etsy fees, order-related expenses, and imputed costs from your net revenue. The result is the contribution margin of the sale.

The following example calculates a domestic sale of $50 including shipping, without Offsite Ads. Etsy collects 7% sales tax from the buyer on top and remits it; the tax doesn’t count toward your revenue, but the payment processing fee is charged on the total including tax:

Item Amount
Customer payment including shipping $50.00
Sales tax collected on top by Etsy (7%, remitted by Etsy) $0.00
Net revenue $50.00
Production or cost of goods -$12.00
Etsy base fees -$5.31
Shipping and packaging -$6.00
Imputed returns reserve, 5% -$2.50
Share of overhead -$1.00
Imputed contribution margin $23.19

The sale generates a contribution margin of $23.19. That’s a contribution margin of 46.4% of net revenue. Adjust the returns reserve and overhead share to your actual figures.

If the Offsite Ads fee of 15% also applies, another $7.50 is deducted. This lowers the contribution margin to $15.69 and the margin to 31.4%. Above $10,000 in Etsy sales within 365 days, the fee drops to 12%, but participation becomes permanently mandatory. 16

Is Etsy right for you? Pros and cons for sellers

What advantages does Etsy offer sellers?

Etsy provides the selling infrastructure and connects creative assortments with the right audience. For sellers, this brings the following advantages:

  • Targeted purchase intent: Many visitors deliberately look for individual products, gift ideas, or handcrafted items.
  • Fast market entry: Etsy provides the shop page, checkout, payment processing, and order management.
  • International reach: Sellers can reach buyers in several countries without building a separate online store for each market.
  • Flexible product tests: New items and variations can be published and evaluated with manageable technical effort.

Which drawbacks do Etsy sellers need to factor in?

When you sell on Etsy, the platform sets the key terms of your sales channel. This creates the following challenges for sellers:

  • Intense competition: Many similar offers compete for the same search queries and buying occasions.
  • Fluctuating cost ratio: Offsite Ads, currency conversion, and other services can push your costs well above the base fees.
  • Dependence on Etsy: Customer access and communication remain tied to the platform. Changes to assortment rules or visibility factors can also affect sales immediately.

Which sellers and assortments is Etsy right for?

Etsy suits sellers whose products show a recognizable design, craft, or curatorial contribution. The assortment should present well visually and leave enough margin for fees, shipping, and advertising. For ordinary merchandise or thin contribution margins, Etsy is usually not the right choice.

The following table helps you classify your own business model:

Check Etsy is a good fit if … Etsy is probably not a fit if …
Assortment your own designs, production, or eligible curation define the product’s value you sell ordinary finished goods or stock merchandise
Margin fees and possible advertising costs are fully priced in the base fees alone already cut deep into your contribution margin
Presentation product benefits and variations are quickly understood from photos the offer requires extensive consultation
Fulfillment inventory and processing times are maintained reliably overselling or late deliveries occur frequently
Channel strategy Etsy complements your own store or other marketplaces your business would depend entirely on Etsy

Getting started and running your Etsy shop

What are the requirements for an Etsy shop?

To open a shop, sellers need a compliant product and verifiable payment and business details. Etsy checks the information against your bank account and documents. You’ll need: 17, 18

  • Account and shop settings: Enter your email address, default language, seller country, and billing currency.
  • Shop name: The name must be four to 20 characters long and may not contain spaces or special characters.
  • First product: Create at least one compliant listing with photos, price, and shipping details.
  • Payment and tax details: Etsy requires a bank account, a billing method, and taxpayer information.
  • Proof of identity: Depending on your legal structure, personal documents or business registration details are required.
  • Beneficial owners: Registered businesses must name everyone with an ownership stake of at least 25%.

How do you start selling on Etsy?

Starting to sell involves shop setup, verification, and your first listing. Proceed in this order:

  1. Check your product: Assign the item to an eligible Etsy model and document your own designs or production partners where applicable.
  2. Configure your shop: Set language, country, currency, and shop name.
  3. Verify your seller details: Enter your bank details, billing method, and the required identity or business information.
  4. Set up your terms of sale: Define processing times, shipping profiles, and rules for returns or personalization.
  5. Publish your listing: Add photos, description, price, and variations. Double-check delivery time and shipping costs.

Which legal obligations apply to Etsy sellers?

Etsy sellers running a business must comply with U.S. federal and state rules for online retail. In essence, this concerns the following areas:

  • Seller and consumer information: Shop policies for returns, cancellations, and privacy must be complete, and promised shipping times must comply with the FTC’s 30-day rule. 19, 20, 21
  • Product safety: Comply with the CPSC requirements; children’s products need a Children’s Product Certificate, and small batch manufacturers must register with the CPSC 22.
  • Packaging: Several states, including California, have passed packaging EPR laws. Check whether you count as a producer and whether a small-producer exemption applies, as in California for gross annual sales below $1 million 23.
  • Accessibility: According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the ADA also applies to goods and services offered online, which matters if you also run your own online store. 24
  • Taxes and reporting: The sales tax collected by Etsy, your own income tax, and the taxpayer information Etsy requests for Form 1099-K must match your business setup.

When does Etsy pay out your sales proceeds?

In new Etsy shops, sales proceeds are generally eligible for deposit 14 days after a sale. Etsy can extend this period or hold funds as a reserve. Initially, deposits are sent weekly on Mondays by default. Later, depending on the account, daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly deposits are available. 25

Visibility, advertising, and customer service on Etsy

How do you optimize Etsy listings for search?

First find out which terms buyers search for and how many competing listings exist for them. Etsy’s Marketplace Insights shows the search and listing volume of the past 30 days for this purpose. 15 queries per week are free; with Etsy Plus, this limit no longer applies. 26

Then apply suitable keywords consistently to the core elements of the listing: 27

  • Title and tags: Describe product type, material, style, or occasion specifically. You can add up to 13 tags per listing.
  • Category and attributes: Choose the most precise category and add every applicable attribute. This lets Etsy match the listing to additional relevant searches.
  • Photos and sales data: Show details, variations, and scale clearly. If a listing gets many impressions but few clicks or purchases, review the main photo, title, and price first.

Beyond content relevance, Etsy also considers listing and service quality. New listings get a short-term visibility boost but then have to prove themselves through clicks, sales, and a good buying experience. 28

How do Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads work?

With Etsy Ads, sellers promote listings they choose themselves within the marketplace. You set the daily budget and pay per click. Start with products that already sell organically and have enough margin for advertising. 7

With Offsite Ads, Etsy selects suitable listings and promotes them on external search engines, social media platforms, or partner sites. Sellers can choose neither the products nor the ad platforms. You’re charged when a buyer orders from your shop within 30 days of clicking the ad.

Below $10,000 in Etsy sales within 365 days, the fee is 15% and you can opt out. Above that threshold, 12% applies with permanently mandatory participation. 16

Which service metrics matter for Etsy sellers?

Etsy primarily evaluates how quickly you respond and whether you ship orders on time. Reviews and cases in which buyers involve Etsy after an unsuccessful help request also count. For response time and shipping, a minimum rate of 80% applies in each case: first messages must be answered within 48 hours, and orders must ship within the processing time.

Check your figures in the customer service section of Shop Manager. Repeated violations can reduce visibility or affect your account status. 29

What does the Etsy Star Seller badge mean?

The Star Seller badge marks shops with particularly high service metrics over the past three months. According to Etsy, the badge does not directly influence search ranking. 30

The requirements are:

  • Messages: 95% of first responses within 24 hours.
  • Shipping: 95% of orders shipped on time and, where required, with tracking.
  • Reviews: An average of at least 4.8 out of five stars.
  • Shop activity: U.S. shops achieve at least five orders and $300 in sales.

Shipping and strategies for scaling your Etsy shop

How do you organize shipping and international sales on Etsy?

Use shipping and processing profiles to store delivery regions, costs, and production times consistently. Etsy uses these details for the estimated delivery dates it displays. 31

Besides postage, also factor in packaging and tracking. For shipments outside the United States, you’ll need customs details such as item value, country of origin, and tariff (HS) code. Before enabling a country, check its import rules and how duties and taxes are handled. 32

Note on Etsy’s seller protection

For qualifying orders, Etsy can cover up to $250 of a buyer refund, including shipping and taxes collected by Etsy. This also applies to higher-value orders, with the seller bearing the excess. Requirements include meeting the customer service standards, on-time shipping, valid tracking, an accurate product presentation, and Etsy Payments. 33

Etsy in multichannel selling

In multichannel selling, you offer your products on Etsy, in your own online store, and on other marketplaces at the same time. To keep product data, prices, and inventory consistent across all channels, this information should be maintained centrally and synchronized automatically.

Especially for one-of-a-kind items and small runs, cross-channel inventory synchronization prevents items that have already sold from being ordered again. If all orders also flow into one central system, they can be processed uniformly regardless of the sales channel.

The marketplace is particularly well suited to original designs, handcrafted products, personalization, and carefully curated vintage assortments.

Start with a clearly defined assortment and expand primarily those listings that generate clicks and sales regularly. As soon as you also sell the same items in your own online store or on other marketplaces, inventory and orders should come together centrally.
