Key facts at a glance: the costs of selling on Temu

  • Getting started and fees: Registration is free; any service fees depend on the terms in your Seller Center.
  • Pricing model: You set the so-called base price (Seller Base Price), while Temu displays the customer price (Retail Price) separately. The difference contains Temu’s margin or service share.
  • Total costs: In the Local Seller Program, you also need to budget for storage, picking, packaging, shipping and returns. Optionally, you can run paid advertising via Temu Ads.
  • Payout: Temu does not state a fixed payout cycle. Settlement, refunds and reserves affect when funds become available; qualifying sellers may benefit from accelerated payouts.
  • Automation: magnalister’s Temu integration reduces the manual effort for product maintenance and price and stock synchronization when you sell in parallel through your web shop or other sales channels.

Why is Temu such a valuable sales channel?

Platforms of Chinese origin are gaining ground in German e-commerce: in 2025, one in every 15 online orders was already placed with one of the major platforms from Asia 1, while Temu alone recorded around 20.9 million monthly active users in Germany in the second half of the year 2.

For sellers, Temu combines this reach with low barriers to entry, because registering as a local seller is free and quick to get started 3.

Peter Mähner, founder and managing director of the multichannel integration provider magnalister, assesses Temu’s role in the German market as follows:

“Temu is one of the most dynamic marketplaces we have connected in recent years. Thanks to the low barriers to entry, the channel is easy to test at low risk and can be used strategically to diversify alongside Amazon, eBay and your own shop.”

You can find out which requirements you need to meet to start selling and how to list your first products in our Temu beginner’s guide. The following sections cover everything else you need to know about selling fees and additional costs.

What fees apply when selling on Temu?

Registration and listing products are free of charge. Instead of a publicly stated standard commission, Temu works with a base price (Seller Base Price) set by the seller. Based on this, Temu determines the customer price (Retail Price) and keeps the difference as its own margin or service share. 3, 4

Some external sources estimate this share at 5–15%. However, Temu confirms neither a fixed percentage nor a generally applicable calculation method. What counts, therefore, are your individual contract terms in the Seller Center.

The key cost items at a glance:

# Cost item Explanation
1 Registration and listings There are no separate fees for signing up as a local seller or for listing products 3, 4.
2 Temu’s margin share Temu’s margin or service share is included in the difference between the customer price and the base price and is not deducted from the base price again 4.
3 Other account-specific deductions Additional transaction-related or account-specific charges are possible. External sources sometimes cite a transaction fee of around 2.5%.
4 EPR-related charges If Temu pays required environmental fees on the seller’s behalf because proof of extended producer responsibility (EPR) is missing, these fees can be charged plus a service fee 5.
5 Temu Ads Costs only arise if you actively use the available advertising features 6.

On top of that, you incur your own operating costs, which Temu does not charge but which belong in your margin calculation in full:

  • Sourcing and importing goods
  • Storage and picking
  • Packaging and shipping
  • Returns, cancellations and loss of value

For your calculation, the key figure is the base price as your expected revenue.

How does the pricing model work for Temu sellers?

Manage Temu Prices From Your Shop Backend

Temu distinguishes between the base price set by the seller (Seller Base Price), an optional price suggestion (Recommended Retail Price) and the actual customer price (Retail Price). For your calculation, the base price matters most, because it represents your expected revenue before any further account charges 4.

Price type Meaning
1 Seller Base Price You enter this amount as the revenue you want for your product. In the order settlement, the sum of the base prices is the starting point for the payout amount.
2 Recommended Retail Price You can suggest this price to Temu without it being binding. It does not determine the actual offer price.
3 Retail Price This is the price at which the product is offered on Temu. Temu displays it separately and can adjust it based on its own pricing logic.

The difference between the base price and the customer price can contain Temu’s margin or service share. This amount is therefore not deducted from the base price again. Even so, check your settlement statements for additional account-specific charges.

What does advertising with Temu Ads cost?

Temu Ads are optional. If the feature is available for your seller account, you set a campaign budget and a target return on ad spend (ROAS). The target ROAS helps steer your campaigns but does not guarantee any particular level of profitability.

Ad billing can be based on impressions served. This means you can incur advertising costs even if an ad does not lead to a sale. Even after you pause a campaign, charges for ads that have already been served can still follow. 6

For your margin calculation, determine the average advertising cost per attributed order:

Advertising cost per order = campaign spend ÷ attributed orders

Only evaluate campaigns after deducting returns and refunds. Otherwise, the reported ROAS will look better than the contribution margin you actually achieve.

What operating costs do Temu sellers need to budget for?

In addition to any Temu charges, sellers bear the variable costs of order fulfillment themselves. These include procurement, storage, picking, packaging, shipping and returns.

What are the storage and picking costs when selling on Temu?

When you sell from local stock, goods have to be stored, picked for orders and prepared for shipping. You can do this work yourself or hire an external fulfillment service provider instead.

This cost block includes, in particular:

  • Storage space and inventory management
  • Item retrieval (picking)
  • Order assembly and preparation
  • Fees charged by an external fulfillment service provider, if applicable

These items are not fees charged by Temu, but they have a direct impact on your contribution margin per order.

What are the shipping and packaging costs when selling on Temu?

Shipping and packaging also belong in your per-order calculation. Take into account both the packaging material you need and the actual shipping costs.

The amount depends on factors such as:

  • Product weight and dimensions
  • Package size and material
  • Carrier and rate
  • Shipping method
  • Destination country

Important: Especially for products with a low selling price, just a few euros in shipping costs can eat up a significant share of the contribution margin.

How do you account for returns and cancellations on Temu?

Besides return shipping costs, returns often involve additional effort for inspecting, refurbishing and restocking the goods. If goods are damaged, opened or can no longer be sold as new, a potential loss of value comes on top.

For a realistic calculation, use your actual return rate per product group wherever possible.

Example: If your return rate is 10% and a return causes an average of €8 in additional costs, you should budget €0.80 in return costs per order.

What customs cost advantage does shipping from an EU warehouse offer?

Compared with fully managed direct shipping from China, an EU warehouse offers a clear cost advantage: goods that have already been imported no longer cross an EU external border when individual customer orders are shipped.

Since July 1, 2026, direct shipments from non-EU countries worth up to €150 have been subject to a flat customs duty of €3 per item category (tariff classification) in the parcel. When you ship from an EU warehouse, this per-order charge does not apply 5. Instead, customs duties and import VAT are paid in bulk when the goods are first imported 7.

In addition, the EU has agreed on a separate handling fee for low-value e-commerce parcels, which is to apply from November 1, 2026 at the latest. Its amount will be set by the European Commission. This cost block also concerns cross-border imports, not the subsequent delivery within the EU from an EU warehouse 7.

Cash flow planning: When does Temu pay out sales proceeds?

Temu does not state a uniform payout cycle for all EU sellers. When an amount becomes available depends on the settlement of the order, any refunds, withheld reserves and the terms of the individual seller account.

For qualifying sellers, accelerated settlement such as “Delivery +1 Settlement” may be available in the Seller Center. In this case, funds can be released shortly after delivery has been confirmed. However, good performance metrics do not automatically lead to an earlier payout. 8

Plan your cash flow based on the regular settlement period displayed. Only factor in accelerated payouts once Temu has actually enabled them for your account.

Sample calculation: How do you calculate your margin on Temu?

The margin on a Temu product is the base price minus all variable costs. The customer price is not relevant for this calculation, provided Temu’s share is already contained in the difference from the base price.

The following example shows the calculation for a fictional home & kitchen product:

Item Amount
Base price as expected revenue €24.90
Procurement incl. acquisition costs −€9.00
Storage & picking −€1.00
Shipping & packaging −€4.50
Expected return costs −€0.80
Optional advertising costs −€1.50
Contribution margin per order = €8.10
Contribution margin ratio = 32.5%

The example does not include any separate Temu deductions, such as account-specific transaction fees. If such costs appear in your settlement statement, deduct them from the base price as well.

The remaining contribution margin then goes toward covering fixed overheads such as staff, software, accounting, administration and warehouse infrastructure. Whatever is left after that is your profit.

How do you determine your economic price floor on Temu?

Your economic price floor is the lowest base price that covers all variable costs plus your target contribution margin. To calculate it, add up procurement, fulfillment, shipping, returns, advertising and any separate Temu deductions.

In the example, variable costs including advertising come to €16.80. If you want to earn a contribution margin of at least €5, the base price must be at least €21.80:

€16.80 + €5.00 = €21.80 minimum base price

The customer price displayed by Temu may be higher. For your pricing, what matters is whether Temu accepts the base price you need and can offer the product at a competitive customer price.

Conclusion: base price and total costs determine your profitability on Temu

Since Temu charges no registration, listing or monthly base fees in the Local Seller Program, sellers start out without any fixed platform costs. Temu’s own share is already included in the difference between the base price and the customer price. The base price is therefore the relevant starting point for your calculation.

Whether a product can be sold profitably only becomes clear after deducting procurement, fulfillment, shipping, returns, optional advertising and any account-specific additional fees. The remaining contribution margin per order must then cover your business overheads before you actually make a profit.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about costs on Temu

Is registering as a Temu seller free?

Yes. Temu charges no registration, listing or monthly base fees in the Local Seller Program. Costs only arise from sales, optional additional services and your own order fulfillment 3, 4.

Does Temu charge a fixed sales commission?

Temu does not publish a generally applicable sales commission for all EU sellers. Sellers set a base price (Seller Base Price), while Temu determines the customer price separately. Temu’s margin or service share is contained in the difference between the two prices 4. The frequently cited range of 5–15% comes from external estimates and has not been confirmed as a uniform Temu fee rate.

Who sets the selling price on Temu?

The seller sets the desired base price and can also specify a suggested selling price (Recommended Retail Price). Temu determines the customer price (Retail Price) that is actually displayed. For the seller’s calculation, the base price is therefore what counts 4, 5.

What additional deductions can apply on Temu?

In addition to Temu’s share included in the customer price, account-specific transaction costs, shipping adjustments or fees for fulfillment violations may apply. A frequently cited transaction fee of 2.5% is not generally confirmed. What counts are your contract terms and settlement statements in the Seller Center.

If the required EPR proof is missing, Temu can also deduct environmental fees from the seller’s balance. According to the Seller Center, a service fee of 0.5% of the environmental fees paid on the seller’s behalf is added in this case. 4, 5

When does Temu pay out sales proceeds?

Temu does not state a fixed payout cycle for all sellers. Settlement, refunds, reserves and the terms of the individual seller account determine when your balance becomes available. Qualifying sellers may be able to apply for accelerated settlement such as “Delivery +1 Settlement” 8.

Does the €3 customs duty also apply when shipping from an EU warehouse?

No, provided the goods have already been released for free circulation in the EU. The duty of €3 per item category applies to low-value parcels worth up to €150 that enter the EU directly from a non-EU country. When you ship from an EU warehouse, it is not charged again for each customer order 7.

Is selling on Temu worthwhile for small product ranges?

In principle, yes. Since there are no monthly fixed costs, even smaller product ranges can be tested at comparatively low risk. How profitable a product is then depends on procurement, logistics, returns and, where applicable, advertising. 3, 4

Is Temu cheaper than Amazon or eBay?

Getting started on Temu is cheaper because there are no registration, listing or monthly base fees. On Amazon.de, the Professional selling plan costs €39 per month (excluding VAT) plus selling fees 10, while eBay.de charges final value fees, possible insertion fees and optional store subscription fees 11. However, whether Temu is cheaper overall ultimately depends on the contribution margin after all platform and fulfillment costs.
